It’s not easy going through your regular day with anxiety right by your side. You may be sitting in class and suddenly start feeling palpitations and your chest getting tighter. It’s hard to remain calm because you know the more you freak out about the anxiety attack, the worse it will get, so what exactly should you do?
Anxiety is a term given for different symptoms that cause nervousness, fear, apprehension, and worrying. These disorders affect how we feel and behave and can cause physical symptoms. Mild anxiety is vague and unsettling, while severe anxiety can seriously affect day-to-day living. Nowadays anxiety is quite common, especially among students, so let’s talk about how to tackle it.
The first step, I found to be truly helpful is talking to someone.
Whether it’s someone you trust or a psychologist, it’s important that you know you don’t have to suffer alone. Talking to someone about it will help you feel comfortable and more at ease.
Taking deep breaths also plays a major role in anxiety reduction. When you breathe in deeply, you feel calmer and more relaxed. You can start by inhaling and exhaling and holding both for 2 seconds, then 4 seconds, and so on until however you feel comfortable with. Even better than just breathing is meditating. Taking time out of your day, preferably the mornings, to meditate through an APP, or a Youtube video to guide you. it helps you slow down, and kind of organize your thoughts a little better.
Having knowledge about what you’re going through and why, helps your mind feel in control, especially during bad days. Visiting a psychologist or reading more about anxiety makes you comfortable and prepared for anything your anxiety may cause.
Exercise produces endorphins, and those little guys play a massive role in making you feel better.
Whether it’s yoga, or playing basketball, it’s important to remember that to create a healthy lifestyle, exercising is very important. You should aim for consistency and set a daily routine. Take a buddy with you if you feel that it’ll make it more fun and enjoyable.
Your diet can make you or break you. As you’ve probably read a bunch of times before, a healthy diet is key when it comes to being physically and mentally healthy. Food with caffeine is a big no because it can trigger panic attacks, especially in high doses. You want to have balanced, healthy meals three times a day and drink lot’s of water. Calcium also helps in lowering anxiety levels.
