We are all tired, and not getting enough sleep, so perhaps it’s time we embraced our puffy eyes with dark circles rather than hide them with concealer. But who knew it would become a beauty trend?
Who initiated the idea?
TikTok user Sara Carsten initiated the trend at the end of 2020, as a video of her painting dark circles under her eyes went viral. It soon expanded to a broader scale, resulting in many people voluntarily smudging makeup under their eyes to appear more tired.

The idea was to normalize dark circles. Since we’re conditioned from a young age to see dark circles as undesirable, many of us use all kinds of eye creams, gels, and creams for under the eyes. Yet, they just won’t go away, so we use concealer sticks instead.
There is no surprise that people get sick of beauty standards every now and then and rebel. Despite our commitment to hiding them, maybe it’s time to do something about it and maybe we should speak more about accepting dark circles.
Well, it wasn’t long before the trend reached the runway when dark under eyes became no-makeup mood during Paris Fashion Week earlier this year. A minimal amount of makeup was worn at multiple shows, while dark circles were embraced rather than covered.

Our hot take on the trend
Unlike the TikTok counterpart, the French version seems more subtle and requires a lot less effort by simply leaving eye bags bare instead of adding more color onto them.
Hiding parts of yourself to feel more confident and beautiful is a complex matter. Having the confidence to confidently show off the parts of yourself you once concealed is not something that happens overnight for everyone. But learning to love your flaws, including the ones under your eyes, makes life so much better.
It’s okay to embrace those dark circles after a restless night! While we don’t know how long this trend will persist, we hope that it does, because what could possibly be more beautiful than accentuating something we are insecure about? Are you willing to give it a try?
