Naya Ghar? Here's how to make it feel like home so you fall in love with it

By MangoBaaz Studio | 3 Apr, 2017

Moving into a new house can be a very exciting time in anyone’s life! Whether you are a young working professional, newly married, or finally moving out of your Ammi and abu’s house (high five). A new place to call your own is the perfect chance to create a space that’s just right for you and all you have to do is follow a few steps.

First, you have to ask yourself:

1. What kind of place do you want to live in?

Visualize coming home from work, what kind of setting do you want to kick off your shoes and relax in? Where do you see yourself being completely and 100% comfortable?

2. What do you want people to feel when they come over?

The best part about having your own place? Having whoever you want over, whenever you want. That means you get to make your place any kind of hangout spot. Of course, don’t take this too seriously, your home is your home at the end of the day so try not to think about what others might like as much. Apna Ghar hai.

3. Focus on the space

When it comes to decorating, there is no such thing as having too small of a house or too big of an apartment, furnish your place the way you want to! All you have to do is be mindful of what you’re working with. Smaller area? Add in mirrors to maximize space. Open space? Darker colors are your friend! They will create a warmer and cozier atmosphere.

4. Keep it comfortable

Don’t buy a ton of stuff that you’re not actually going to be comfortable using. Do you think you’re really going to snuggle up with that 100% silk chaddar at night? Nope. Stick to the super fuzzy blanket that you won’t mind your baby or mehmaan spilling food on.

5. Start out with the color

Do you want a dark, dignified, and slightly emo look? Or bright yellow walls to remind you of how bright your future is? (MashAllah). Color changes everything. The right shades can make spaces bigger, smaller, cozy, or super fancy. This might take some time but it’s okay, koi rush nahi hai. Not every room has to be the same either! Try out different themes, textures, or whatever your decorator’s heart desires to create the perfect palette!

6. Bring in some furniture.

Furniture is super super super important when putting together a new home. Everything from the couch, to the mattress, to the super comfy bed linens by Ideas, the TV stand, pinball machine, vintage coffee maker, side table, giant superhero model. You don’t have to play it safe here! All of this stuff will make your space your own, so make sure you add your own specific taste.

7. Decor

The things that are really going to add character to your home are symbols and trinkets of the things you love. Everything from music to movies, sports, and even cushions with some Mughal art. Decor can be anything you want it to be, as long as you feel some kind of connection to it! Cost-effective decor can include framing old letters, postcards – even pages of books you love! The decor is supposed to be personal.

Also, how CUTE are these?

The decor is the icing on the cake that is your lovely new home.

8. Khaana – har Jaga

Fooooood. Keep your fridge, pantry, storage cupboard, closet, bathroom, and every other room in the house full of food. Food is the way to the heart and having it everywhere is just going to make your home one giant bundle of love. Just watch out for anything that melts or could cumulate fungus. Bad scene.

9. Your puraani cheezein.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with recycling old furniture. Adding in these things will not only save you money but also bring in some of the feels of your old home. The old collection of Ideas bed sheets are the perfect old-school touch as well!

This sensible thinking will also make your mom happy, promise.

10. Memories to last a lifetime.

Pictures always add the perfect touch, college friends, your parents, your dog, fill your home with everyone you love so that you’re never lonely.

Fresh flowers can do instant wonders for any home. Fresh plants in general add an earthy and natural touch to any space. To all the guys out there, this applies to you as well.  They add life, color, and smell absolutely amazing!

12. Take your time

Don’t try and do too much too quickly. Ghar bananay mai time lagta hai. There’s no need to splurge on things just because you want to fill your space up. Take your time and find things you love in a gradual process. Easy ho jao, sab kuch mil jayee ga.

13. Your loved ones

At the end of the day, your home is your safe haven. The most important thing that will make your house a home will be the memories you create in it. So even though it may be a bit hectic and frustrating, creating a home out of your Naya Ghar will be one of the most rewarding experiences.
