Fatima Jinnah will always remain one of the most iconic Pakistani women.
The 8th of March marks International Women’s Day, and this year, spirits are incredibly high in Pakistan. Women all over the country are organizing marches to demonstrate their strength and demand equal rights from fellow Pakistanis as well as the government.
Prime Minister Imran Khan not only acknowledging the occasion of Women’s Day but paid tribute to Fatima Jinnah
His statement has evoked a lot of emotions from a lot of Pakistanis.
On Women's Day, we pay tribute to Fatima Jinnah who stood steadfastly beside the Quaid in his struggle for Pakistan. We reaffirm our commitment to ensuring women a secure & enabling environment to play their rightful role in our nation's development. pic.twitter.com/tw71sDT1m0

Imran Khan tweeted that he is committed to ensuring women have a secure environment in which they can prosper and thus help the country prosper as well.
People, especially women, were touched by the sweet tribute from the Prime Minister.
A leader with vision, honesty and confidence to lead the nation in a righteous direction.

But there were a few who did not appreciate Imran Khan’s words, saying he only acknowledged Ms. Jinnah in light of her brother
On this day Fatima Jinnah is being praised as the second fiddle to Jinnah.
How about praising her for standing against the first most brutal dictator Ayub Khan who led the foundation for dismemberment of Pakistan? Why not praise democratic credentials of Fatima Jinnah? https://t.co/zHF7UNUnIa— Murtaza Solangi (@murtazasolangi) March 8, 2019
Also, Fatima Jinnah was much more than just someone who “stood steadfastly besides the Quaid.” Why not highlight her many contributions to Pakistan instead of her allegiance to a man?

And err… someone tried to distract the conversation by bringing up Mr. Khan’s personal life
On #WomensDay we pay tribute to Late Sita White who stood steadfastly beside her daughter in her struggle for getting her paternity recognized. Little did she knew that one day Tyrian will become the first daughter of Pakistan.😁

Anyway, the sentiment the Prime Minister shared was sweet. Let’s hope his tenure leads for more laws being passed and implemented which make Pakistan a better place for women to live. While it is heartening to see the outpouring of support by Pakistani men and women alike on social media for International Women’s Day, it will not matter until and unless all of this support translates into actual changed behaviors and mindsets.
Let’s hope for the best! Happy International Women’s Day ladies and gents, don’t forget to smash the patriarchy!
