This School In Mardan Gave Female Students Burqas And Honestly, Are We REALLY Doing This Again?

By Rameeza Ahmad | 5 Oct, 2019

This school in Mardan just ‘gifted’ female students a shuttlecock burqa and honestly, haven’t we already had this debate like a few weeks ago?

After the recent controversy the government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa landed itself into after declaring that they would enforce religious covering for female students in the province, people thought the issue had ended after they gave an immediate withdrawal of the decision after major public backlash.

But it seems that a local union council official in Mardan liked the idea quite a lot. So much so, that even after the provincial government took back the notice, he decided to go on with it with local council funds.

The local head of the union council bought shuttlecock burqas for female students and went to distribute it to the local school as ‘gifts’ for the female students – without any permission to carry out this activity from provincial authorities or even the school’s principal.

The images which came out after the girls had been given the shuttlecock burqas to wear made a lot of people uncomfortable.

Zia Ullah Bangash, the Advisor to Chief Minister Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Education, who was in hot water not too long ago in the media as he was asked to defend his government’s decision to implement religious covering for female students in schools, was the one who gave a clarification over this incident.

Though he was notably defending the previous decision by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in front of Shahzaib Khanzada, he now told the media that this decision was not approved by the government and the local union council had acted on its own.

He clarified that this move and decision had had no support from him or the Khyber Pakhtukhwa government.

However, unless the person behind this is reprimanded officially, it might set a dangerous precedent where local union councils think it’s okay to act on their own and implement their own rules as they see fit.

What do you think of this move by a local union council officer giving female students shuttlecock burqas? Let us know in the comments below.
