But why don’t women experience the same “Benjamin Button effect”?
According to dermatologists, hormones play a significant role. Estrogen receptors on skin cells affect the health and appearance of skin, which is why men’s skin tends to age better than women’s even though men skincare is considerably less popular.
Women have thinner skin due to hormonal and biological differences, making them more susceptible to wrinkles and sagging. Sun exposure and lifestyle factors also affect women’s skin due to their higher levels of UV sensitivity and longer lifespan. However, genetics, diet, and skincare regimen can also impact skin aging.
As women age, they may notice thinning skin around the mouth, resulting in vertical lip lines and more noticeable crow’s feet around the eyes. Skin on the hands also shows earlier signs of aging due to less subcutaneous fat, making veins and tendons more noticeable. Men face it noticeable only if severely exposed to sun or having a genetic predisposition to hyper pigmentation. In all those cases men skincare becomes as imperative as women skincare.
In contrast, studies show that men’s skin tends to have higher levels of hydration, transepidermal water loss, sebum, microcirculation, and pigmentation. Men’s skin is also generally thicker, including on the face, neck, and abdomen. However, women have a higher skin pH than men.(These differences were measured using a corneometer, a device that indicates the hydration level of the superficial layers of the skin, on men and women of all ages).
Note: There are countless gorgeous women out there who are taking excellent care other skin and are looking amazing at every age. This article only addresses the flabbergasting reason why men seem to have great skin despite not doing anything at all!
