There Will Be A Supermoon Tonight And Here's How You Can See It In Pakistan

By Sarmad Amer | 14 Nov, 2016

There was a Supermoon last night, and the whole world is excited. These Pakistanis are also jumping with joy about what people are also calling the , ‘super luna’.

So what exactly is a Supermoon?

Astrologer Richard Nolle coined the term in 1979 and the phenomenon is generally defined as a “new or full moon which occurs with the Moon at or near (within 90% of) its closest approach to Earth in a given orbit (perigee)”. Basically, when the Moon appears big because it is close to the Earth, that is the Supermoon.

Why is this particular one so special?

It is the closest the Moon has been to the Earth since 1948 so the world is geared up to see it closer than anyone else has ever seen. According to scientists, the next Supermoon may be 18 years from now, on November 25, 2034.

Where and when in Pakistan can you experience it?

As per a notification issued by the Pakistan Meteorological Department, you can see the Supermoon on November 14 i.e. tonight at 6.52PM Pakistan Standard Time.

They’ve also warned that because the Moon is so close, coastal areas may experience higher tides than usual therefore the “general public is advised to remain careful from 13-15 November along the shore.”

This is what Pakistanis have to say about seeing the moon being absolutely ‘super’:

Like this guy believes it will be a pretty sight:

We think so too, buddy.

And this one who’s already planned his location to experience the phenomenon

This person apparently saw it a day before the official date as told by the Met Office

And this patriotic Pakistani’s supermoon is something else

Get ready with your DSLRs, phones, tweets, Instagrams and Snapchats because tonight the Moon is going to be real super 😛
